In Honor of Hurricane Season
Friday, August 13, 2010

It's hurricane season, which means I hear from people who have read "Defining the Wind" and have something interesting to share. Today I received this fabulous link, which goes to an interactive animated Beaufort Scale in German and was sent to me by someone from Kiel, Germany. There are so many different Beaufort Scale links out there (including here, set to music with limited success by British composer Joe St. Johanser, and here, set to music with enormous success by Finnish composer Aulis Sallinen, and here, set to music by Sevastopol). For plain old text, try this one, which is pretty detailed, and for a fun but disappointing animation check this one, from the usually reliable Mount Washington weather station that uses wrong Beaufort descriptions(!). But the new German one is by far the best I've ever come across. Thanks, Reimer Lincke, of Kiel, Germany.

In On the Grid, Scott Huler takes the time to understand the systems that sustain our way of life, starting from his own quarter of an acre in North Carolina and traveling as far as Ancient Rome.
